TC Optimist Adopt-a-Road Clean-up

Adopt-A-RoadThe Traverse City Optimist Club has a vested interest in the Adopt-A-Road Program. Our participation in this program is driven by more than one cause. There is no doubt it grants us a sense of pride to take part in this event that helps keep our beautiful part of the country clean. However, our stretch of road from the Shell Station on Garfield and Hammond, to the Shell Station on Three Mile and Hammond holds a special value to our hearts.

Traverse City Optimist Club Adopts Hammond Road

One of our local founders, and a big contributor to the TC Optimist Club was Art and Mary Schmuckal. Their family business involved these and many more of the Shell Gas Stations throughout the area.

Through the generocity of Art and Mary Schmuckal, the TC Optimist Club offers  up their Environmental Education Cabin Property, (a donation from the Schmuckal family) for youth groups to enjoy and learn.

TC Optimist Club Partakes In The Community

By being a part of a large community based volunteer group that contributes to the success and sustainability of our City. Any civic minded group, business, industry or individual that participates in the Adopt-a-Road cleanup is showing pride in the community.

General Information GT County Adopt-a-Road

Adopt-A-HighwaySince 1991, the Grand Traverse County Road Commission has been involved in a cooperative effort with local groups and families to retain the natural beauty of our area.  There are 188 total routes, with some available for adoption on any given year.  Groups enroll for a two-year membership and perform three trash pick-ups per year along a two-mile section of county road.  An annual safety meeting among volunteers is required.

The GT Road Commission provides two recognition signs, training video, trash bags and vests as well as picking up the trash after the route has been cleaned.   Click on this link to view the Open Routes list for route availability.
